Deputy PM Urges Innovative Methods in Search for Martyrs’ Remains

Seeking improved approaches for the retrieval and identification of fallen soldiers, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra emphasized the necessity for innovative methods during a recent session. On May 8, she engaged with the National Steering Committee’s support team, stressing the complexity of tasks involved in this crucial mission.
Innovative Methods for Martyrs’ Remains Search
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted that the search process involves decoding information, analyzing data, and locating mass graves, which necessitate advanced scientific expertise. To enhance efficiency, she called for a shift in mindset among relevant agencies and the adoption of new methodologies.
Challenges and Coordination Issues
- Many ministries and member agencies have struggled to meet reporting requirements.
- Coordination mechanisms need improvement to bolster monitoring and evaluation.
Furthermore, she directed the Ministry of National Defence to assign an additional 5–7 dedicated officers for the “500-day campaign.” This is to ensure that operational plans and regulations for the support team are both effective and transparent.
Communication Strategy
In terms of outreach, Tra advocated for a robust communication strategy. This should engage both central and local media, alongside digital platforms and foreign service channels. The aim is to emphasize the campaign’s humanitarian significance.
Targets and Timelines
Clearly defined and measurable objectives are crucial at each implementation phase. The Deputy PM urged agencies to expedite the collection of samples and to conduct searches in priority areas throughout May and June, ahead of the rainy season.
| Key Areas for Research | Activities to Initiate |
|---|---|
| Kon Tum | Scientific workshops on mass graves |
| Quang Ngai | Excavation preparation |
| Quang Tri | Field searches |
Software Development and Reporting
The Deputy PM urged the swift development of software to track progress in the “500-day campaign.” This software should automate reporting processes, streamline sampling goals, and facilitate archival research.
Progress Review and Recovery Goals
The National Steering Committee is set to perform a progress review, assign responsibilities, and inspect various locales and military zones. A target has been set to recover and repatriate at least 500 sets of martyrs’ remains by July 27, 2026.
Initially launched on April 2, 2026, the “500-day campaign” is currently in its expedited implementation phase. The Ministry of National Defence reported recovering 358 sets of martyrs’ remains between March 15 and May 6, 2026, including:
- 51 remains in Vietnam
- 36 remains in Laos
- 271 remains in Cambodia
Through these initiatives, the search, recovery, and identification of martyrs’ remains is poised for significant advancements.
