Harry Meade Secures Podium Despite Rare Fall at Badminton Cross-Country

Harry Meade faced a dramatic challenge during the Mars Badminton Horse Trials cross-country event held on May 9. Despite experiencing a rare fall with his horse, Cavalier Crystal, he still managed to secure a podium position. The event showcased intense competition among top riders, with surprising outcomes in the leaderboards.

Event Highlights from the Badminton Cross-Country

Meade’s ride on Cavalier Crystal was highly anticipated, as the mare had previously excelled. She had secured third place at Burghley Horse Trials multiple times and finished fourth at Badminton the previous year. However, the combination of Mike Weaver’s Farm Yard fence (22ab) proved problematic. Cavalier Crystal lost her footing while attempting to jump, resulting in a fall for Meade.

“Cavalier Crystal was truly remarkable during the earlier parts of the course,” Meade stated. “Up until that point, she was performing wonderfully.” Unfortunately, the situation led to both a fall and an injury for the horse, which suffered a deep cut to her pastern.

Standings and Performances

Notably, while Meade had to withdraw from the competition with Cavalier Crystal, he still held a strong position on his other horse, Annaghmore Valoner. After completing a clear round within the time limit, Meade rose to second place in the overnight standings.

  • Leading Rider: Ros Canter with Lordships Graffalo
  • Current Position: Meade in second with Annaghmore Valoner
  • Sarah Bullimore: Third place with Corimiro
  • Additional Top Performers: Katie Magee (fourth), Lucy Latta (fifth), Tim Price (sixth)

Thirty-five out of sixty riders successfully completed the course without faults, demonstrating the challenging nature of the event. Among these, only seven riders clocked in under the designated time, showcasing the rigorous competition.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming showjumping phase is crucial. If Ros Canter triumphs, her horse, Lordships Graffalo, will make history by becoming the first to win the Badminton Horse Trials three times. Meade and Annaghmore Valoner will continue to compete in hopes of maintaining their top rankings.

The 2026 Badminton Horse Trials also offers viewers the chance to experience the event through various streaming options. Fans can subscribe to Badminton TV for live coverage, ensuring they do not miss any of the action.

With thrilling performances and unexpected outcomes, the Badminton Horse Trials continue to be a highlight of the equestrian calendar, drawing in talent from across the globe.
