Naomi Osaka Reveals Coach’s Absence at Rome Opening Match

Naomi Osaka made her mark at the Italian Open by securing a victory over Eva Lys in the second round. The match concluded with scores of 6-4, 4-6, and 6-3. However, Osaka’s coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, was notably absent from this contest.
Coach’s Absence Explained
During a post-match press conference, Osaka addressed her coach’s absence. Wiktorowski had informed Osaka in advance that he would not be present. “He has, like, a personal thing that he had to go do,” she said, emphasizing that it was communicated to her beforehand.
Despite the absence of Wiktorowski, Osaka had support from her team. Her hitting partner, Matias Zukas, took on a coaching role in Wiktorowski’s absence. She expressed her confidence in Zukas’ ability to support her during the match.
Preparation and Confidence
When asked about preparing for unfamiliar opponents like Lys, Osaka noted the significance of her coach in that process. “Honestly, I kind of leave that up to my coach,” she remarked, indicating the importance of their discussions prior to matches.
Osaka entered the contest feeling confident after her experience in Madrid. She highlighted her desire to continue improving and building on her current form, which she believes will be beneficial for both her performance in Rome and her pursuit of success at Roland Garros.
Looking Ahead
In a statement to Sky Sports, British player Liam Broady praised Osaka’s victory. He noted the match was a “titanic battle of wills” and acknowledged Lys’s commendable performance. Broady expressed his belief that Osaka has the potential to advance far in this tournament.
Osaka’s next challenge will be against Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the third round. Should she progress, a match against Iga Swiatek looms in the last 16. Swiatek has maintained an upper hand in their head-to-head encounters, leading 2-1, and has not lost to Osaka since 2019.
Path to Success
- Potential clashes if Osaka advances:
- Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals
- Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals
- Aryna Sabalenka in the final
Osaka’s journey in Rome is likely to be challenging if she aims to secure her first WTA title on clay. However, given her form this season, her fans have ample reasons to remain optimistic about her prospects.
