Cream Cheese Recall Intensifies Over Severe Health Risk Concerns

A significant recall of cream cheese products has been intensified due to serious health risk concerns from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The alert was upgraded to a Class I recall on February 20. This classification indicates a reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences or death linked to the contaminated products.

Cream Cheese Recall Details

The cream cheese in question belongs to Made Fresh Salads, a company based in Long Island, New York. Fourteen different flavors, sold in five-pound tubs, have been identified in this recall. These flavors include:

  • Apple Cinnamon Cream Cheese
  • Caramel Apple Cream Cheese
  • Blueberry Cream Cheese
  • Garlic & Herb Cream Cheese
  • Jalapeno Cream Cheese
  • Jalapeno Cheddar Cream Cheese
  • Lox Cream Cheese
  • Scallion Cream Cheese
  • Strawberry Cream Cheese
  • Sundried Tomato Cream Cheese
  • Vegetable Cream Cheese
  • Walnut Raisin Cream Cheese
  • Whipped Cream Cheese
  • Tofu Whipped

Health Risks Associated with Listeria

The major health concern arises from potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can lead to severe illness, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. Healthy individuals might experience mild symptoms such as high fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems face greater risks, including miscarriages and stillbirths.

Contamination Source and Consumer Advisory

The recall follows routine testing revealing that a component of the mixer used to produce the cream cheese was contaminated. Made Fresh Salads has since ceased the use of the affected mixer. Notably, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recall at the time of the company’s announcement.

The recalled cream cheese products have expiration dates extending through February 27. Consumers who have purchased these items are encouraged to return them for a full refund to ensure safety.
