Spotify Expands Audiobook Selection with Narrated Magazine Articles

Spotify is enhancing its audiobook selection by introducing narrated articles from prominent publications. This initiative includes content from famous sources such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, and Vanity Fair. The streaming platform offers over 650 long-form magazine articles available in English for its audiobook users.
Expanding Content Offerings
This expansion is a strategic move for Spotify as it seeks to diversify its content and increase user engagement. The company aims to better compete with rival services, including AI music startups like Udio and Suno, along with larger podcast competitors such as YouTube and Netflix.
Market Presence
- Spotify co-CEO Alex Norstrom stated that the platform has captured approximately 20% of the U.S. audiobooks market.
- The narrated articles, created by Spotify’s in-house Audiobooks team, will each be under two hours in length.
- Spotify has rolled out its Audiobooks service across 22 markets since its launch over two years ago.
Access and Pricing
For premium subscribers, these narrated articles are included as part of their audiobook monthly allowance. Free users can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each. Colleen Prendergast, the licensing lead at Spotify Audiobooks, remarked, “By bringing shorter form content into the mix, we’re meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits, ultimately growing engagement with books over time.”
Recent Developments
In addition to the audiobook enhancements, Spotify has recently partnered with Universal Music Group. This collaboration allows subscribers to create AI-generated covers and remixes of tracks from selected artists. Furthermore, Spotify introduced a new feature called “Reserved,” enabling eligible premium subscribers to buy tickets for concerts from their favorite artists before the general public release.
