Metrolinx Delays Aurora GO Station Upgrades Until Late 2027

Metrolinx has announced a significant delay in the upgrades for the Aurora GO Station, pushing the completion date to late 2027. Originally anticipated for completion in 2026, this infrastructure project is designed to enhance service capacity along the Barrie line corridor.

Upgrades and Changes to Aurora GO Station

The Aurora upgrades aim to support more frequent service on the Barrie line. Key enhancements include:

  • Construction of a second track
  • A new west platform
  • Improvements to the existing east platform
  • Updated rail signals
  • A new passenger drop-off and pick-up area
  • A new exit on Berczy Street
  • A pedestrian tunnel with elevators connecting both platforms

During a recent construction liaison committee meeting, it was noted that plans for the Yonge Street railway trestle have undergone changes. The original intention to widen the trestle for two tracks has been abandoned. Trains will continue to operate on the existing single-track structure, albeit with scheduled traffic controls to manage two-way traffic.

Revised Service Schedule

Despite scaling back, Metrolinx aims to maintain some level of expanded service. After the project’s completion, GO Transit plans to implement:

  • One-way rush-hour trains every 15 minutes toward and from Toronto
  • Two-way off-peak service every 30 minutes

Long-term aspirations for full two-way, all-day service remain part of the strategic vision for the Barrie line corridor.

Community Concerns and Future Plans

Further developments revealed plans for a 380-space parking lot off Industrial Parkway North. Residents expressed worries over potential traffic congestion in the station area. In response, Metrolinx is conducting a traffic study, with results to be shared with the Town of Aurora.

Additionally, questions arose regarding a heritage property located near the Wellington Street East rail crossing. Metrolinx has committed to conducting a review of the site through its heritage department.

Ongoing Maintenance Activities

Meanwhile, rail maintenance will continue throughout the summer. Overnight track work and weekend closures are scheduled, with the next closure dates set for May 29 to June 1 and July 24 to 27. These activities are necessary for essential maintenance on the Barrie line.

Residents living near the corridor should be prepared for potential noise and vibrations during construction and maintenance periods. Those with inquiries are encouraged to reach out to Metrolinx directly at [email protected].
