Saguenay Police Officers Honored for Rescuing Six from Fire

Seven police officers from the Saguenay Police Service (SPS) were recently recognized for their heroic efforts in rescuing six individuals from a fire in Chicoutimi. This commendation marked a significant moment during the launch of Police Week.
Saguenay Police Officers Honored for Bravery
On August 3rd and 4th, 2023, officers, including William Fradette, acted swiftly during a nighttime incident on Thomas-Duperré Street. The fire engulfed an apartment building, leaving its occupants trapped. Thanks to the rapid response of the police, all six residents were safely evacuated.
Fradette expressed the emotional impact of the event, stating, “We worked together to save six people who were engulfed in flames. It’s a great pride for each one of us to receive this medal from the Ministry of Public Security.” He emphasized that this recognition extends beyond personal achievement.
The commendation serves to enhance the public perception of police work. Fradette remarked, “Highlighting such events shows that our role involves more than just issuing citations. It reaffirms pride in the profession and demonstrates that police are here to help and protect the community.”
Police Week Activities Promote Community Engagement
The dedication to strengthening community-police relations is central to the activities planned for Police Week. The SPS commenced the week with a bowling tournament in a senior residence in Chicoutimi.
- Wednesday: Police members participated in a breakfast discussion with the PANDA organization.
- Thursday: Officers visited another senior residence in Jonquière for a baseball and beanbag toss event.
- Public Invitation: On Thursday from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, the public was invited to meet officers at Place du Royaume.
Caroline Darveau, media relations officer for SPS, mentioned, “We will connect with the community, allowing for a discussion about our realities.”
Charity Run to Support Special Olympics Quebec
Police Week will conclude with a charity run benefiting Special Olympics Quebec on Saturday morning. Officers will gather at 10 AM in front of the Arvida Community Center, swapping their uniforms for athletic gear. Nearly 200 participants, including 20 athletes from the Special Olympics, are expected to join this inaugural event.
Sergent Marie-Michelle Fradette, one of the event organizers, shared, “The funds raised will support the athletes, who will also participate in the run. This year is our trial edition, aimed at expanding participation.”
Additionally, the Saguenay Police Service has recently launched a Facebook page to enhance interaction with citizens. This platform will serve as a resource for community members to ask questions, stay informed about police activities, and gain insight into the daily operations of the police force.
