Esquimalt Teen Among 6 Vancouver Island Picks in 2026 WHL Draft

The 2026 WHL Draft has seen significant local talent emerge from Vancouver Island, with six players selected, including Esquimalt’s own Mazen Green. This promising 15-year-old was chosen 45th overall by the Kamloops Blazers on May 7, showcasing the strength of player development in the region.

Background on Mazen Green

Mazen Green honed his skills playing roller hockey against older opponents at the Esquimalt lacrosse box. He credited these experiences for shaping his competitive spirit and skill set.

“I trained there almost every day. The older players were welcoming and helped me improve,” Green stated.

Draft Experience

Green watched the draft unfold online while attending class, a moment he found both surprising and thrilling. His selection by Kamloops reflects the team’s interest in his potential contributions.

On the day before the draft, conversations between the Blazers and Green’s agent, James Haddad, indicated that the team had a strong interest in his playing style. Green’s father, Jeremy, expressed confidence in the team’s commitment to his son’s development.

Player Highlights

Describing himself as a two-way forward, Green aims to emulate the playing styles of NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Macklin Celebrini. In the previous season with Delta Hockey Academy, he tallied 18 goals and 28 assists, achieving a total of 46 points in 30 games.

Other Local Selections

In addition to Green, several other Vancouver Island players were drafted:

  • Malone Mann – 167th overall, Seattle Thunderbirds
  • Theodore Kim – 177th overall, Calgary Hitmen
  • Ronan Gow – 50th overall, Lethbridge Hurricanes
  • John Main – 61st overall, Tri-City Americans
  • Jace Zemanek – 250th overall, Penticton Vees

The Victoria Royals actively participated in the draft, making eight selections, including Kristian Lima at 28th overall. Lima previously recorded 51 points in 30 games with the Burnaby Winter Club.

Future Aspirations

Several drafted players, including Green, will be attending the Team BC Men’s Program of Excellence camp in Chilliwack from July 23-26. The camp will prepare them for competition at the 2027 Canada Games in Quebec City.

Green aims to continue improving his skills and strengthening his physique as he looks ahead to his future in hockey. His father highlighted his dedication and passion for the game, stating, “He just loves the game, and his hard work shines through. We are proud of his achievements.”

As the WHL season approaches, the players selected from Vancouver Island, particularly Mazen Green, are well-positioned to make an impact in their respective teams.
