Over 100 Infected in Norovirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

A recent norovirus outbreak on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship has infected over 100 individuals. The ship operated in the Caribbean from April 28 to May 11, carrying 3,116 passengers and a crew. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 102 passengers and 13 crew members reported symptoms.

Details of the Norovirus Outbreak

The outbreak was reported by the CDC on a Thursday. Symptoms primarily included vomiting and diarrhea, causing widespread concern among passengers. Following reports of illness, Princess Cruises issued a statement acknowledging the situation.

Health and Safety Measures Implemented

In response to the outbreak, Princess Cruises took immediate action to enhance sanitation protocols on board. The company emphasized their efforts to disinfect various areas of the ship. They also implemented several precautionary measures:

  • Increased handwashing compliance with supervision.
  • Installation of additional hand sanitizer dispensers.
  • Modification of buffet service to eliminate self-serving by passengers.

Upon arrival at Port Canaveral on May 11, the Caribbean Princess was scheduled for complete cleaning and disinfection before its next sailing.

Prior Incidents and CDC Response

This incident marks the fourth gastrointestinal illness outbreak reported on cruise ships in 2023, according to the CDC. Similar protocols were activated during a previous outbreak in March, which affected over 150 individuals on another Princess Cruises voyage.

The CDC has confirmed that affected passengers and crew members were isolated and samples were collected for further analysis. These ongoing measures aim to prevent future occurrences of norovirus and ensure passenger safety on cruise ships.
