Summer McIntosh Anticipates Challenges: “It’s a Long Summer Ahead”

Summer McIntosh, a rising star in the swimming world, is gearing up for an intense summer season. Her focus is on the Canadian Trials and the Pan Pacific Championships, both occurring in the coming months. With valuable training ahead, McIntosh aims to maintain her status as one of the premier swimmers globally.
Upcoming Challenges for Summer McIntosh
McIntosh recently achieved impressive victories at the Ft Lauderdale Open. These wins included a hard-fought race in the 400-meter freestyle against American swimmer Katie Ledecky. McIntosh emerged victorious with a time of 3:58.91, narrowly beating Ledecky, who finished at 3:59.02.
Training Before Major Events
The Canadian Trials are set for July, followed by the Pan Pacs in August. In preparation, McIntosh expressed the necessity of extensive training, saying, “It’s a long summer ahead.” She plans to return to the Olympic Training Center (OTC) soon for focused sessions, emphasizing both hard work and enjoyment during her training.

- Pan Pacific Championships: Mid-August
A Critical Eye on Performance
While McIntosh secured wins in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:54.36, she felt a tinge of disappointment. “I thought I would be a bit stronger,” she noted, as her previous best was 1:53.80. This time positioned her as the second-fastest swimmer globally this season, trailing Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan.
Her coach, Bob Bowman, viewed the 200-meter race optimistically, highlighting it as a constructive stepping stone for future competitions. McIntosh acknowledged that while her performance is a work in progress, the focus remains on sharpening her turns and overall technique.
Historic Achievements and Future Ambitions
McIntosh has made her mark in the swimming community by setting multiple world records, including:
- 400-meter freestyle: 3:54.18
- 800-meter freestyle: 8:05.07
- 200-meter individual medley: 2:05.70
- 400-meter individual medley: 4:23.65
All records were set last summer during her dominating performances at the Trials. With excitement building, McIntosh looks forward to competing in a new pool environment at this year’s Trials, anticipating it to be one of the highlights of her swim season.
As she prepares for her upcoming competitions, McIntosh remains confident and focused, ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.
