Hurricane Priscilla Strikes Western Mexico, Unleashing Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Hurricane Priscilla has struck Western Mexico, resulting in heavy rain, powerful winds, and rough surf along the coastal areas and the Baja California peninsula. The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, reported that the storm was located approximately 205 miles west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, with maximum sustained winds reaching 85 mph.

Preparations and Warnings in Baja California Sur

In response to the impending danger, a tropical storm watch was issued for Baja California Sur, encompassing the region from Cabo San Lucas to Cabo San Lazaro. On Monday night, authorities in Baja California Sur announced that all educational facilities in Los Cabos and La Paz will suspend classes starting Tuesday as a safety precaution. Additionally, the government has established around 12 shelters in Los Cabos to assist residents in high-risk areas.

Weather Forecast and Impacts

Forecasters predict that regions of southwestern Mexico could receive up to 4 inches of rain through Wednesday due to the outer bands of Hurricane Priscilla. This rainfall poses a significant risk of flash flooding, particularly in Michoacán and Colima states. Swells generated by the hurricane are already impacting the Mexican coastline, leading to life-threatening surf and rip currents, according to weather advisories.

Future Storm Predictions

Hurricane Priscilla is anticipated to intensify into a Category 2 storm before it begins to weaken. Simultaneously, Tropical Storm Octave, which is approximately 840 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, is diminishing, with maximum sustained winds at 50 mph. Currently, there are no watches or warnings related to Octave, as forecasts indicate that it will continue to weaken and dissipate within a few days.
