Wildfire Forces Closure of Snake Pass in Peak District

A significant wildfire has recently forced the closure of Snake Pass in the Peak District, impacting local moorland areas. The incident occurred on National Trust-owned land. The Peak District Moorland Group, comprising local gamekeepers, has reported ongoing efforts to manage the blaze.
Firefighting Efforts and Response
Firefighters and moorland gamekeepers worked overnight to control the wildfire. Many were on-site all night, while others returned to assist in the morning. The group expressed their concern over the worsening conditions, as moderate winds and dry weather have exacerbated the situation.
Recent Incidents and Wildfire Risk
- Last weekend, 36 incidents of wild camping and open fires were dealt with by gamekeepers.
- The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation has raised the wildfire risk index to red in all moorland areas across England and Wales.
This increase in risk highlights the ongoing dangers posed by dry weather and outdoor activities. The Peak District Moorland Group urges the public to exercise caution during this critical period.
