Drivers Secure Refunds for Fines Issued Despite ‘Free Parking Today’ Signs

Motorists who received fines while parked at Grantham Railway Station during a designated free parking period can now claim refunds. This confirmation comes from NCP, the former operator of the station’s parking facilities.
Key Details on Refunds for Parking Charges
- Dates of Incident: March 26 and 27, 2023
- Location: Grantham Railway Station
- Refund Procedure: Affected motorists can claim refunds for Parking Charge Notices (PCNs).
- Company Response: NCP will cancel any PCNs issued on March 26 and 27.
NCP stopped operating the Grantham Station parking area after March 27 due to going into administration. Although the parking facilities were closed, Grantham Estates kept the car parks open. Euro Car Parks assumed control of the site starting March 31.
Case of Andrew Wheeler
A Nottingham resident, Andrew Wheeler, reported an issue after he parked at the station on March 27. He collected a passenger without paying since the payment machine was out of service, and banners indicating “free parking today” were displayed.
Wheeler received a £60 ticket but paid it. However, after LincsOnline intervened, NCP revoked the ticket and expressed apologies for the inconvenience. Wheeler documented the signage as the situation seemed questionable.
Statement from NCP and Grantham Estates
NCP confirmed that all PCNs issued during this timeframe would be canceled or refunded. In response to complaints from various motorists, David Hindmarch, managing director of Grantham Estates, stated that concerns about the situation were valid.
He informed that NCP had removed the relevant signage before issuing any tickets, confirming that drivers had parked legitimately at the time. Hindmarch emphasized the importance of adhering to their commitment to refund motorists.
Claim Your Refund
Motorists who believe they are entitled to a refund should contact NCP following the appeal instructions on their parking charge notice. If there is no response within 28 days, further assistance can be sought by emailing [email protected].
