Singapore-Malaysia Taxi Cross-Border Rules: Key Details Effective May 4

The latest developments in cross-border taxi travel between Singapore and Malaysia are set to take effect on May 4. These new rules aim to facilitate smoother transportation for travelers between the two regions.
Overview of Cross-Border Taxi Rules
Travelers in Singapore now have the convenience of booking a taxi to destinations like Johor Bahru City Square. However, there are specific regulations that govern the operations of Malaysian taxis in Singapore.
Operational Limitations
- Malaysian taxis cannot pick up passengers from residential areas in Singapore.
- They are restricted to designated pick-up points, which include locations like VivoCity.
- In Malaysia, these taxis can only operate within approved areas, namely:
- Johor Bahru
- Iskandar Puteri
- Forest City
- Kulai
- Senai
- Travelers cannot complete trips outside these specified locations.
How to Book a Cross-Border Taxi
Grab is the only ride-hailing platform currently offering cross-border taxi bookings. Starting May 4, it will launch a new service called Cross-Border SG-JB (Beta).
- This service allows for advance, door-to-door bookings between any location in Singapore and approved areas in Johor.
- Passengers can book rides between 12 hours and seven days in advance.
According to Grab, they plan to expand and enhance the service as more licensed cross-border taxis join the platform and as feedback is collected from both drivers and passengers.
