Potholes Increase Flat Tires While Spare Tires Disappear from Cars

Potholes are becoming a significant concern for drivers in the province, leading to a rise in flat tires and the notable absence of spare tires in many vehicles. This winter, CAA-Québec reported a considerable uptick in calls for assistance due to tire punctures caused by these hazardous road conditions.

Impact of Potholes on Flat Tires

This year, the increase in potholes has created challenges for numerous motorists. Emmanuel Mountakis shared his experience, mentioning he suffered three flat tires from potholes in the past year. He considers himself fortunate to have a spare tire in his pickup truck, which allowed him to get back on the road safely.

Decline of Spare Tires

According to Pierre-Alexandre Couvrette, a patrol officer at CAA-Québec, spare tires are increasingly rare in modern vehicles. The growing size of tires, including those in electric cars, often limits trunk space necessary for storing a spare. Instead, many manufacturers provide repair kits featuring sealing substances and air compressors.

Statistics on Tire Interventions

  • Interventions for flat tires increased by approximately 50% in Montreal during January and February compared to the previous year.
  • The overall increase in the rest of the province was around 30% for the same period.
  • An additional surge of 30% in tire-related interventions occurred in early April in Montreal and Quebec City.

Alternative Solutions and Recommendations

Experts, however, are critical of the repair kits. Antoine Joubert, an automotive columnist, notes that while these kits may provide a temporary solution, they are not effective for severe tire damage, such as that from a pothole. In situations where a tire is severely impacted, towing is often the best recommendation.

Guidelines for Drivers

Understanding how to respond to a flat tire situation is crucial for all drivers:

  • Check if your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire before hitting the road.
  • If you get a flat, safely move off the roadway.
  • Assess the damage: Is the tire still usable? Ensure you have the necessary tools and knowledge for a proper fix.

As potholes increasingly threaten road safety, ensuring your vehicle has the right equipment for emergencies becomes essential for all motorists.
