Construction Commences on Massive 20-Million-Litre Water Storage Tank

Construction has officially begun on a substantial 20-million-litre water storage tank in Welby, near Grantham. This facility is a significant part of Anglian Water’s extensive pipeline project connecting North Lincolnshire and Essex. The pipeline spans an impressive 205 miles and is crucial for managing water distribution in the region.
Project Details
The completion of the water storage tank is anticipated by autumn 2027. This facility will be instrumental in transferring up to 55 million litres of water daily between Lincoln and Grantham. The project includes the installation of a new pumping station and generator to enhance water movement where it is most needed.
Sustainability Focus
Aron Petney, the construction manager at SPA, emphasized the project’s purpose. “This water storage tank at Welby is essential for future preparedness. It will facilitate water storage and streamline its distribution, ensuring supplies remain steady during dry spells,” he stated.
- Location: Welby, near Grantham
- Storage Capacity: 20 million litres
- Daily Transfer Capacity: Up to 55 million litres
- Completion Date: Autumn 2027
Design and Environmental Considerations
The Welby reservoir’s design closely mirrors that of a similar facility in Rede, Suffolk. Anglian Water aims to construct the storage tank using sustainable materials and efficient building practices, minimizing environmental impact while ensuring longevity.
Pipeline Expansion
This project is not just about the storage tank. It comprises a 90km pipeline stretching from Grantham to Bexwell, near Downham Market, passing through several communities, including Peterborough and various villages in South Lincolnshire.
Addressing Regional Challenges
The East of England faces unique challenges, as it is one of the driest areas in the country, receiving only two-thirds of the average rainfall for England. Additionally, potential population growth of one million by 2045 puts further strain on water resources. This situation makes the region particularly susceptible to climate-related issues like droughts and flooding.
To mitigate these risks, the above-ground storage reservoir will serve as a crucial resource for ensuring reliable water supply to meeting growing demand in the area. The project is being managed by Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance, which includes esteemed partners such as Costain, Farrans, Jacobs, and Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB).
