Liberals Face Criticism for Holding Committee Debates Behind Closed Doors

The Canadian Conservative Party has criticized the Liberal government for holding committee debates behind closed doors. This shift occurred after the Liberals gained a majority in the House of Commons.
Closed-Door Committee Sessions Spark Controversy
On Tuesday, the health and ethics committees welcomed new Liberal MPs, enabling the government to secure a majority of seats. Shortly after the start of the meetings, the Liberal members utilized their majority to move discussions to a closed session.
- Implications of Closed Sessions: Media access was restricted, preventing the public from following the debates online.
- Accountability Concerns: Michael Barrett, Conservative ethics spokesperson, expressed his concerns over this limitation on public discourse.
Health Committee Investigation Proposal
Conservative health spokesperson Dan Mazier had intended to propose an investigation by the Auditor General into the PrescripTIon program, a $300 million initiative aimed at modernizing medical offices. This program is set to be phased out next month, as reports indicate it is underutilized.
Mazier stated, “We were going to ask the Auditor General to conduct an investigation, but Liberal MP Maggie Chi voted to shut off cameras.” His comments highlighted frustration with the process.
Reactions from Liberal Members
During the health committee meeting, Bloc MP Maxime Blanchette-Joncas attempted to question Maggie Chi about her vote for the closed session. The Liberal committee chair dismissed the inquiry, indicating the voting process had already taken place.
Chi did not respond to inquiries regarding her vote. Additionally, Liberal committee members declined to address questions from reporters about their decision during a subsequent caucus meeting.
Defending Committee Autonomy
Liberal House Leader Steven MacKinnon defended the committees’ authority. He remarked, “No one is shutting down debate. We engage in numerous discussions daily regarding our ambitious legislative agenda.”
This controversy emphasizes ongoing tensions in Canadian politics regarding transparency and accountability in government proceedings.
