Royal Navy Pipes: Decoding Sea Life’s Unofficial Language

A new book titled “D’you hear there!” by Richard Harris explores the unique communication methods used aboard Royal Navy ships and submarines. It provides insights into daily life at sea, utilizing the concept of “pipes” or broadcast announcements as a focal point. This book is not just a glossary of naval terms but a humorous and wise reflection on life in the Royal Navy.
Understanding Royal Navy Pipes
The book breaks down the meaning and significance of various pipes. Each chapter provides context by detailing the reactions of the crew to these announcements. It encompasses eight main chapters, which include:
- Life in Harbour
- Exercises on FOST
- Experiences at Sea
- Runs Ashore
- Homecoming
These chapters describe the amusing and sometimes bizarre situations that arise during naval duties. The interplay and banter among different branches of the Navy provide comedic relief throughout the narrative.
Highlights from the Book
One illustrative example is the announcement, “Chef Knowles, pizza, Gangway.” Although it seems straightforward, it can create worry if the ship is at sea, especially if the chef has ordered food while on duty. Another highlight notes a barbecue announcement on the flight deck, humorously illustrating the chefs’ ongoing responsibilities even during such breaks.
This engaging guide serves both veterans of the Royal Navy and newcomers considering service. It offers a glimpse into the language and quirks shaped by centuries of naval tradition.
Author’s Background
Richard Harris brings extensive experience to the subject. He served in the Royal Navy for 31 years, starting as an Able Seaman and retiring as a Commodore in 2023. His career included time aboard nine ships and deployments to various regions, including the Arabian Gulf, South Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Arctic Circle.
Harris also commanded HMS Raleigh and was involved in training Officer Cadets at BRNC Dartmouth, giving him a unique view of Navy life.
Illustrations and Dedication
The book features illustrations by Captain Jim Nisbet, RN (Retd), evoking the style of the former Navy News cartoonist, ‘Tugg’ Wilson. It is dedicated to Commander Amy Gilmore, a beloved RN aviator who passed away in July 2025. Proceeds from the book will support charities that assisted her.
