Church Conversion Planned: Transforming Historic Building into Spacious Family Home

The proposal to convert St David’s Church in Abercraf, Ystradgynlais, Powys, into a family home aims to maintain the historic structure’s significance. The application, submitted by Dan Borba and Veronica Kauer, seeks a change of use for the former church, which has been disused since 2016. The plan will ensure that the surrounding graveyard remains untouched.

Details of the Church Conversion Project

St David’s Church, built in 1912, features coursed rock-faced Pennant stone and ashlar lancets. It is not a listed building. The last Eucharist service occurred on April 10, 2016, attended by the Right Reverend John Davies, the former Bishop of Brecon and Swansea. The church was put up for sale in 2021 following a reorganization of the Upper Swansea Valley.

Previous Applications

A previous proposal included converting the church into holiday lets but was withdrawn. The current application focuses on a single-family dwelling to serve as the applicants’ primary residence.

Proposed Layout and Features

  • The nave will transform into an open-plan living area.
  • A study room will be established opposite the bell tower.
  • A home gym is planned above the office space in the nave.
  • The organ chamber will be altered into a kitchen and dining area.
  • The vestry will convert into exterior bin storage and utilities.
  • The chancel will feature a bathroom and sitting area on the ground floor.
  • A bedroom and additional bathroom will be located on the first floor.

Community Impact and Preservation

Liam Griffiths-Downing, the planning agent, emphasizes that this conversion aims to provide a sustainable redevelopment of St David’s Church. This approach ensures the longevity and preservation of the structure while respecting the area’s historic interest.

A decision regarding the application is anticipated soon. The developers hope that the proposed changes will benefit both the applicants and the surrounding community.
