CFL 2027: Summer Weekend Season and New Playoff Era Unveiled

The Canadian Football League (CFL) is set to unveil significant changes for its 2027 season. This update includes a new start date, playoffs format, and a focus on summer weekends. These updates promise to enhance both the experience for fans and the overall excitement of the game.

CFL 2027: Season Schedule Revamp

The upcoming CFL season will commence on Victoria Day Weekend, marking a shift toward summertime football. This change positions the CFL at the forefront of summer sports in Canada. Long weekends from May to Thanksgiving will be integral to the regular season, introducing new tradition, alongside the well-known Labour Day Weekend matches.

New Playoff Structure

To complement the refreshed season, the CFL has revamped its playoff structure. Beginning in 2027, the playoffs will feature four additional games. This expansion will heighten competition in the latter part of the season as teams vie for playoff positioning.

  • Top-2 teams in divisions secure at least two playoff games.
  • Postseason re-seeding will be implemented, allowing any team to face off irrespective of their division.
  • Teams will need to secure two victories in the playoffs to advance to the Grey Cup.

Commissioner Stewart Johnston highlighted that these changes will deliver “More games. More drama. More entertainment.” The goal is to create an engaging atmosphere for fans both in stadiums and at home.

Collaborative Efforts with CFLPA

The CFL collaborated closely with the CFL Players’ Association (CFLPA) to integrate this new playoff format into the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. CFLPA Executive Director David Mackie stated that the changes support both player interests and the league’s ambition for ongoing growth and excitement.
