Blue Jays Sideline Max Scherzer Due to Forearm and Ankle Injuries

Max Scherzer has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. The Toronto Blue Jays announced this decision on Monday. In response, right-handed reliever Chase Lee was recalled from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Performance Struggles

The 41-year-old veteran had a challenging outing against the Cleveland Guardians last Friday. He allowed seven runs on six hits, including three home runs, in just 2.1 innings. Over his last two starts, Scherzer has managed only one strikeout across 8.1 innings.

Season Statistics

  • ERA: 9.64
  • Strikeouts: 10
  • Walks: 8
  • Innings Pitched: 18.2

Scherzer’s forearm tendinitis resurfaced during his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 6, forcing him to leave after just two innings. He disclosed to reporters that he has been advised to take a rest period of five to seven days before considering future steps. The ankle injury has hindered his ability to pitch effectively.

Upcoming Schedule and Team Impact

Scherzer was originally scheduled to start against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. His placement on the injured list adds to the Blue Jays’ pitching woes, joining fellow starters Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Cody Ponce on the IL.

In the meantime, Trey Yesavage is set to make his season debut on Tuesday. Chase Lee, now active against the Red Sox, could potentially make his team debut in this game.

Chase Lee’s Background

The Blue Jays acquired Lee from the Detroit Tigers in December. Last season, he recorded a 4.10 ERA in 32 relief appearances for the AL Central team. This season with the Bisons, Lee has posted impressive numbers, including:

  • ERA: 1.32
  • Strikeouts: 12
  • Saves: 2
  • Games: 9

As the Blue Jays navigate the loss of Scherzer, they will be looking to maximize their pitching options moving forward.
