Two significant wildfires near the Clay-Putnam County line in Florida have prompted voluntary evacuations as local and state fire crews combat the fast-spreading flames. The Florida Forest Service reported multiple resources deployed to address the blazes affecting nearby communities.
Details of the Clay County Fire
On Sunday evening, fire crews were dispatched to a blaze south of Green Cove Springs around 5:30 p.m. This wildfire has rapidly consumed approximately 1,700 to 1,800 acres and remains 0% contained.
- Location: Near County Road 209 and Maranda Drive.
- Cause: Likely ignited by sparks from a train.
- Evacuations: Residents along Varney Rd. and Woodward Ln. have been urged to evacuate.
- Evacuation Center: Shiloh Baptist Church (1055 CR 226).
Response Efforts
Fire departments from Jacksonville, St. Johns, and Putnam counties are assisting in suppression efforts. Aerial support is provided by flight crews from Chattanooga, who have completed four drops to protect structures in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, a second wildfire is burning in Putnam County, just a few miles south of the first. This fire, located north of Bostwick and east of U.S. 17, has burned about 700 acres and is currently 5% contained.
