Kevin Pillar to Shine in Victoria’s Home Run Derby

A fan-favorite baseball event is set to return to Victoria this summer, featuring a prominent retired player. Kevin Pillar, former outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, will participate in the West Coast League (WCL) Home Run Derby.
Event Details
The WCL Home Run Derby is part of the 2026 WCL All-Star Game Festival, which will take place from July 14 to 15. The venue for this exciting event will be Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.
Kevin Pillar’s Background
Kevin Pillar, age 37, has concluded a successful 13-season career in Major League Baseball. Over his time in the league, he appeared in more than 1,200 games and hit 114 home runs. While playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, he became a fan favorite renowned for his exceptional defensive skills, earning him the nickname “Superman.”
Innovative Format
This year’s Home Run Derby will feature a unique structure known as “Home Run Derby X.” It will be the first time this format is utilized at a Canadian venue. Developed by Major League Baseball, it incorporates a defensive aspect into the competition. In this format, players in the field can earn points through successful catches, including home run robberies, in designated zones.
- Format: Three-on-three structure over three innings
- Time: Hitters will have 2 minutes and 30 seconds at the plate
- Goals: Players aim for distance and accuracy by targeting bonus zones
- Defensive Strategy: Opponents will counter with strategic defensive plays
Organizer’s Comments
Brenda MacFarlane, co-chair of the All-Star Game, expressed enthusiasm for the new format. “This is all about the home runs, but the twists on defense make it an absolute blast – pardon the pun,” she stated. Pillar’s return in a Blue Jays uniform is expected to attract many fans.
Upcoming All-Star Festival
The Home Run Derby will serve as a key opening event on July 14, leading into the WCL All-Star Game on July 15. This game will showcase the top players from the league, ensuring an exciting weekend for baseball fans in Victoria.
