21-Year-Old Driver Banned for Crashing BMW at Double Drink-Drive Limit

A 21-year-old driver from the Isle of Wight has received a driving ban after crashing his BMW while nearly twice over the legal drink-drive limit. Adam Wade, residing on Eddington Road in Seaview, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on April 17, where he admitted to a drink-driving charge.

Incident Details

Wade was involved in a car crash on February 9 at the junction of Embankment Road and Latimer Road in St Helens. The collision left his BMW 3 Series 320i M Sport extensively damaged, with debris scattered across the road and the deployment of airbags in the vehicle.

Police Findings

  • Upon arrival, police officers observed Wade slurring his speech.
  • He was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he admitted he had misjudged a turn.
  • A blood test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 147mg per 100ml, nearly double the legal limit.

Court Proceedings

During the court hearing, it was noted that Wade had no previous criminal record. His defense attorney, Michael McGoldrick, expressed concern over Wade losing his reputation and the impact on his apprenticeship due to the driving ban. Wade was drinking with friends prior to deciding to drive a short distance home.

Financial Repercussions

The crash left Wade’s BMW written off, resulting in a debt of £8,000 owed to his parents. Following the verdict, magistrates disqualified Wade from driving for a period of 19 months and imposed a total financial penalty of £697, which included costs, a surcharge, and a fine.
