Ontario Colleges Announce Merger, Preserve Local Brand Identities

Fleming College in Peterborough is set to merge with St. Lawrence College in eastern Ontario. This merger aims to enhance educational opportunities for students. Both colleges are working to formalize their integration while preserving their unique brand identities.

Details of the Merger

On a recent Friday, Fleming College and St. Lawrence College initiated plans to join forces as equal partners. This move is expected to provide expanded academic pathways and increased access to specialized programs. The combined management team will be led by President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt.

Leadership Statements

Don Gillespie, Chair of the Fleming College Board, commented on the merger’s significance. He emphasized that the integration process is a long-term strategy to strengthen the colleges in their communities. “Our responsibility is to ensure our institutions remain strong and sustainable for students and local communities,” Gillespie stated.

Process and Planning

Both colleges have approved an integration framework agreement. However, a structured engagement process must first take place. This process will include detailed due diligence, operational planning, and community feedback before the final merger implementation.

Sector Challenges

This merger comes at a challenging time for Ontario’s college sector, particularly due to a cap on international students set to take effect in 2024. The union representing 55,000 college faculty and support staff has cautioned that this could lead to widespread job losses, marking potential layoffs as significant as those seen in the province’s history.

Future Outlook

Despite the current challenges, the colleges view this integration positively. Theresa Knott, Interim President of Fleming College, described the merger as an investment in students and communities. “By combining our strengths, we are creating more opportunities and a stronger foundation for the future,” Knott emphasized.

Campus Locations

  • St. Lawrence College: Campuses in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall.
  • Fleming College: Campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Haliburton, and Cobourg.

The merger between Fleming College and St. Lawrence College is poised to reshape the educational landscape in eastern Ontario, providing more innovative solutions to meet the needs of local students and communities.
