Geely Targets UK Expansion with Ambitious Plans from Volvo’s Chinese Owner

Geely, the Chinese automotive giant, has set ambitious plans for expansion in the UK market. The company aims to sell 100,000 vehicles annually by 2030 as part of this initiative. This move follows Geely’s remarkable global sales of 4.1 million vehicles last year.
Local Manufacturing Potential
Michael Yang, the head of Geely Auto UK, believes that if market conditions and demand prove favorable, the company could establish local manufacturing in the UK. Having a production base could significantly reduce operational costs and meet local demand more efficiently.
Exploring Additional Manufacturing Options
Geely is also considering utilizing Volvo’s manufacturing facilities in the United States to avoid import tariffs. This strategy reflects Geely’s proactive approach to navigating complex trade regulations while expanding its reach in international markets.
Investment in Research and Development
To bolster its expansion and innovation, Geely has invested over £200 million in building a cutting-edge safety center and wind tunnel complex. This facility is designed to enhance the vehicle development process through rigorous testing.
- The complex includes three distinct wind tunnels:
- First tunnel: Handles gusts up to 155 mph with temperature ranges from -40°C to +60°C.
- Second tunnel: Can simulate gusts at 124 mph and altitudes above 5,200 meters.
- Third tunnel: Serves as a backup facility.
- Additional climate rooms are available to simulate extreme weather conditions for vehicle testing.
Geely plans to share these advanced testing facilities with external partners, emphasizing its commitment to collaboration within the automotive industry. This strategy not only benefits Geely but also enhances industry standards for safety and performance testing.
As Geely positions itself for growth in the UK, the combination of local manufacturing plans, strategic partnerships, and significant R&D investments suggests a promising future for the brand in this competitive market.
