Born on February 26, the baby giraffe measured six feet four inches at birth. She is the offspring of her mother, Mstari, and has garnered significant attention since her arrival.
Public Naming Contest
The Toronto Zoo offered five Swahili names for public voting. These names were provided by the Kenyan Honourary Consulate in Toronto and included:
- Binti: “Daughter”
- Imara: “Strong, firm, resilient”
- Nyota: “Star”
- Neema: “Grace”
- Sanaa: “Beauty/art”
With over 23,000 votes cast, the name Imara was chosen as the winner. Toronto Zoo CEO Dolf DeJong expressed the meaning behind the name, highlighting its connection to strength and hope. He noted, “There’s something deeply hopeful about what our community has chosen to name this calf.”
Public Debut and Reception
Imara made her first public appearance on March 13 during the busy March break. Visitors flocked to see her, causing lines to extend throughout the zoo’s Africa Savanna exhibit.
In a statement, the zoo thanked guests for their respectful behavior, allowing Imara to adjust to the presence of crowds. The staff mentioned that she is bonding well with her mother, Mstari, and is enjoying her new home by playfully exploring her surroundings.
