B.C. Mother and Daughter Freed After 19 Days of ICE Detention in Texas

A mother and her seven-year-old daughter from Penticton, British Columbia, recently regained their freedom after spending 19 days in immigration detention in Texas. Tania Warner and her daughter, Ayla, were released from custody on Thursday after posting a bond of $9,500. Tania expressed her relief, stating, “It will not feel real until I see this place in the rearview mirror.”

B.C. Mother and Daughter’s Detention Background

Their ordeal began on March 14 when the pair was stopped at a mandatory border checkpoint in Sarita, Texas. They were returning home from a baby shower when U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained them. Tania had previously navigated similar checkpoints without any issues and was not expecting to be apprehended.

Immigration Status and Legal Proceedings

Tania and Ayla had been residing legally in the United States for five years. Tania had moved to Texas to be with her husband, Edward Warner, a U.S. citizen. During a bond hearing, Tania’s immigration lawyer presented evidence that she had filed the necessary documents to extend her stay. The judge determined that Tania and Ayla were not flight risks but mandated that she wear an ankle monitor after her release.

Conditions in Detention Centers

Initially, Tania and Ayla were held at a processing center in McAllen, Texas, before being moved to a family detention center in Dilley, Texas, five days later. Tania has spoken out against the detention conditions, describing them as appalling. She noted that many families she spoke with had been detained for nearly a year, despite making efforts to comply with immigration regulations.

Next Steps for the Family

Now that they are free, Tania and Ayla face several hearings to determine their legal status in the United States. Their future remains uncertain as they navigate the complexities of immigration law.
