Bill Cosby to Pay $19M in Sexual Abuse Settlement Ruling

A jury in California has awarded Donna Motsinger over $19 million in a civil case against Bill Cosby, a veteran U.S. entertainer. The judgment comes after Motsinger claimed she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby over 50 years ago.

Key Details of the Case

The civil hearing took place in Santa Monica, where Motsinger, now 84, recounted her experience as a waitress when she first encountered the comedian. Cosby had frequented the restaurant where she worked and later offered her a ride in his limousine.

During that ride, he provided Motsinger with a glass of wine and allegedly a pill she believed to be aspirin. Following that, Motsinger reported feeling disoriented and awakening later at her home in a state of undress. Her legal representation stated, “She knew she had been drugged and raped by Bill Cosby.”

Verdict and Consequences

After three days of deliberation, the jury ordered Cosby, now 88, to pay $19.3 million. There is a possibility that amount may increase due to potential punitive damages. Cosby, who has denied any memory of sexual contact with Motsinger, claimed any involvement was consensual.

This verdict follows a previous case in 2022, where Cosby was ordered to pay $500,000 to Judy Huth. Huth accused him of molesting her in 1975 when she was 16. Additionally, the comedian was jailed for similar charges in Pennsylvania in 2018 but was released in 2021 when his conviction was overturned on a legal technicality.

Cosby’s Legacy of Allegations

Bill Cosby, once celebrated as “America’s Dad,” is now viewed through the lens of numerous allegations from women who claim he preyed on them. These accusations span over four decades and involve claims of drugging victims with sedatives and alcohol before assaulting them.

  • Settlement Amount: $19.3 million
  • Verdict Duration: 3 days of deliberation
  • Previous Damages Payable: $500,000 to Judy Huth
  • Years of Allegations: Over 40 years

This recent ruling amplifies the conversation surrounding sexual abuse and accountability in Hollywood, highlighting the ongoing impact of Cosby’s actions on many lives.
