Manchester United Legend Steve Bruce Urgently Calls for Action After Grandson’s Tragic Death

Steve Bruce, the Manchester United legend, has called for immediate action in the maternity services sector following the tragic death of his grandson, Madison Bruce-Smith. This urgent plea follows a coroner’s inquest that highlighted serious concerns regarding the unregulated industry of maternity services and the qualifications of maternity nurses.
Tragic Incident and Inquest Details
Madison Bruce-Smith, just four months old, was found unresponsive in his family home in Bowdon, Trafford, on October 18, 2024. His father, Matt Smith, discovered him at 7 AM. According to the inquest held at South Manchester Coroners’ Court, Madison had been placed on his stomach to sleep, a practice contrary to UK medical guidelines that recommend babies sleep on their backs.
The Role of Maternity Nurse
At the time, Madison was under the care of Eva Clements, who presented herself as a maternity nurse yet lacked any formal medical training. The inquest revealed that the Bruce-Smith family believed Ms. Clements was qualified and acting within a regulated framework, which was later proven to be false.
- Ms. Clements had no official nursing or midwifery qualifications.
- She had only completed a day-long course with Ruthie Maternity Services, run by Ruth Asare.
- Ms. Clements charged between £14 and £16 per hour for her services.
Despite the couple expressing concerns about placing Madison on his stomach, Clements reassured them that it would be fine. During the inquest, police revealed that Ms. Clements was arrested on suspicion of neglect; however, charges were not pursued as there was no evidence of intentional harm.
Calls for Regulation in Maternity Services
Coroner Alison Mutch expressed alarm at the misleading use of the title “maternity nurse.” The lack of regulation in the maternity nursing industry poses substantial risks to newborns. Mr. and Mrs. Smith emphasized the absence of any formal oversight, leading to parents being misled by claims of professionalism.
Statement from the Family
In their poignant statement, the Smiths described their devastating loss, stating, “Losing Madison has been utterly excruciating. We will never forgive ourselves for agreeing to tummy sleeping.” The family pleaded for a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure that no other families experience a similar tragedy.
Coroner Mutch plans to submit a prevention of future deaths report to the Health Secretary, urging the implementation of regulations for maternity nurses and services. She noted the increasing demand for support among new parents and emphasized that unregulated advice from maternity services can jeopardize children’s safety.
The need for strict regulations in the maternity services sector is clearer than ever. As the Bruce-Smith family highlights, it is essential to protect infants from harm and ensure that caregivers possess the necessary training and qualifications.
