CRA to Remove Tax Drop Boxes After This Season

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced significant changes to its tax filing procedures. After this current tax season, the agency will eliminate drop boxes for tax submissions and payments.
Current Drop Box Locations
Currently, Newfoundland and Labrador host two drop box facilities located in St. John’s. The locations include:
- Empire Avenue
- Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building, downtown
National Context
Across Canada, there are 45 drop box locations. However, usage has seen a drastic drop. According to the CRA, the use of these drop boxes has plummeted by nearly 78 percent over the last six years.
Impact of Declining Usage
During the 2024-25 fiscal year, only approximately half a million Canadians utilized the drop boxes for their tax matters. This stark decline has prompted the CRA to reevaluate the efficiency of drop boxes in the tax filing process.
Alternative Filing Methods
With the discontinuation of drop boxes, residents now have several alternative options for submitting their taxes:
- Electronic filing via the CRA’s online platform
- Mailing tax returns
- In-person payments at Canada Post locations
As the CRA adapts its services, Canadians are encouraged to explore these alternatives for tax processing and payments moving forward.
