Fatal Fire in Old Montreal: Owner Émile Benamor Charged with Seven Manslaughters

Three years after a devastating fire claimed seven lives in a historical building at Place d’Youville, the owner has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) arrested Émile Benamor, a controversial lawyer and active real estate investor, in connection with the tragic incident that occurred on March 16, 2023.

On the day of the fire, the building housed 22 individuals. Six escaped unharmed, while nine were injured and required hospitalization. Sadly, seven victims lost their lives.

Charges Against Émile Benamor
Émile Benamor, 63, is facing 15 charges, including involuntary manslaughter for the deaths of the seven victims. He is also accused of causing injuries to eight others due to criminal negligence. The police arrested him around 7 AM while he was inspecting his properties.
Following the fire, Benamor insisted he would cooperate with the investigation. However, legal ramifications have brought key issues to light. He has been previously cited for various safety violations over the last 14 years, including blocked emergency exits and a lack of smoke detectors.
Safety Concerns and Investigations
Reports revealed that at least one housing unit lacked windows. Investigations have uncovered that the fire was of a criminal nature. A suspect, Denis Bégin, filmed at the scene, remains uncharged despite claiming knowledge of how the fire started.
