Kathy Weir, the wife of the late rugby star Doddie Weir, has completed an impressive 750-mile cycle across four countries in memory of her husband. The journey concluded in Dublin, reflecting the strength and resilience of those fighting against motor neuron disease (MND).

At 55 years old, Kathy led a team of cyclists, which included 12 core teammates, on this ambitious ride. Over four days, they traversed Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland, collectively covering between 180 to 220 miles each day. This effort was in support of the My Name’s Doddie Foundation, established by Doddie Weir following his MND diagnosis.
Fundraising Success
The cycle raised a remarkable £1.17 million, demonstrating the community’s commitment to fighting MND, a condition that claimed Doddie Weir’s life in 2022. The atmosphere during the ride was electric, especially in Dublin, where loved ones, media, and local supporters gathered to cheer the cyclists’ arrival on March 13, ahead of a major rugby match between Scotland and Ireland.
Reflections on the Ride
Kathy expressed gratitude for the extraordinary support received along the route. “This ride has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” she stated. The encouragement from various communities helped the cyclists during challenging moments.

“Doddie was a teammate and a force of nature. This challenge was about more than just distance – it was about honoring his spirit,” Wainwright added.

MND is a progressive neurological disorder that leads to muscle weakness. In the UK, six individuals die from this disease daily, yet no cure exists. The My Name’s Doddie Foundation aims to raise awareness and funds to combat this devastating condition.
