Abbotsford Firm Fined $5K for Lacking Fall Protection at Chilliwack Site

An Abbotsford-based construction firm has been fined $5,000 for failing to provide adequate fall protection at a job site in Chilliwack. This penalty was issued by WorkSafeBC due to a repeated violation deemed high-risk.

Details of the Violation

The penalty stems from an inspection that took place on February 19, 2026, while Build 4 U Construction Ltd was engaged in framing a house. Inspectors noted that two workers were actively installing roof trusses without any fall protection measures in place.

Unsafe Working Conditions

  • One worker was positioned on the top chord of an erected truss.
  • The other was situated on the top plate of the third floor.

This setup exposed the workers to significant fall risks, estimated at heights of up to 9.1 meters (30 feet).

The Dangers of Falls in Construction

Falls are known to cause severe injuries in the workplace. According to WorkSafeBC, more than 44,000 injury claims related to falls from heights were filed between 2015 and 2024. Implementing proper fall protection is essential to safeguarding workers.

Regulatory Requirements

WorkSafeBC emphasizes that regulations mandate the use of fall protection systems when workers operate at heights of three meters (10 feet) or more. Protection is also required when a fall from lesser heights might lead to serious injuries.

To mitigate these risks, construction firms are encouraged to prioritize the use of safety equipment, effective planning, thorough supervision, and comprehensive training programs for their employees.
