Middle East Conflict Forces Cancellation of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has prompted the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grands Prix. Originally scheduled for April, these events will not take place, impacting the Formula 1 season significantly.

Cancellation of Grands Prix

The Bahrain Grand Prix was set for April 12, followed by the Saudi Arabian race the following weekend. The decision to cancel has not been officially confirmed but is anticipated shortly, likely by the end of the weekend. This cancellation is largely due to safety concerns for personnel, as tensions in the region persist without any sign of resolution.

Economic Impact on Formula 1

The cancellation will reduce the Formula 1 season to 22 races. It is expected to result in a financial hit exceeding £100 million. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are known for paying some of the highest fees to host races. Losing these events will significantly affect the economic landscape of the sport.

Alternative Locations Considered

Formula 1 officials explored potential alternate venues, including:

  • Portimao, Portugal
  • Imola, Italy
  • Istanbul Park, Turkey

However, due to the short timeframe required for organizing a race at these locations, and the uncertainty around securing hosting fees, these alternatives were deemed impractical.

Schedule Adjustments

The cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races will create a five-week gap in the racing schedule. The last event before this break is the Japanese Grand Prix on March 29, with the next race taking place in Miami on May 3.
