Flood Warnings Impact Ayr and New Hamburg Communities

Recent weather conditions in Waterloo Region, including rising temperatures and increased rain, have resulted in significant flood warnings for Ayr and New Hamburg. The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued these alerts due to the accelerated melting of snowpack, leading to ice jams and flooding along the Nith River.

Impact of Flood Warnings on Communities

The GRCA classified the affected areas into flood warning zones. As of Sunday evening, regions near the Nith River were anticipated to reach Zone 2 levels, with potential for escalation to Zone 3 by Monday. “Warm weather and rain over the past three days have contributed to this situation,” stated the GRCA.

Weather Forecast

Current forecasts indicate air temperatures may exceed 7 or 8 degrees Celsius in the northern parts of the watershed. By Tuesday, temperatures could climb into the mid-teens, prompting further snowmelt and rising water levels.

Safety Precautions

Residents are urged to exercise caution near local waterways and ponds. The GRCA warns that riverbanks are particularly slippery and, coupled with fast-moving water, present significant hazards. Parents should supervise their children and pets, keeping them away from all water-related areas.

Road Closures in Affected Areas

The flood warnings have necessitated several road closures, including:

  • Tannery Street, Ayr – Northumberland Street to Stanley Street
  • Holland Mills Road, New Hamburg – Bleams Road to Huron Road
  • Milton Street, New Hamburg – Shade Street to Hannah Street
  • Union Street, New Hamburg – Huron Street to Burns Street
  • Lisbon Road, Wilmot – Nafziger Road to the east end
  • Wilby Road, Wilmot – Nafziger Road to Sandhills Road

Monitoring Flood Risks

Although there are currently no flood concerns regarding the Grand River in North Dumfries, ongoing rain and warm weather could exacerbate the situation. Local residents are advised to stay updated on flood developments by checking their city and township websites, as well as the GRCA’s resources.
