DfT Allocates 2025 Active Travel Fund to Local Transport Authorities

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced funding allocations for active travel across various local transport authorities. This initiative is part of an integrated transport settlement spanning from the financial year 2026/27 to 2029/30.
Key Funding Allocations for Active Travel
The financial allocations are designed to enhance walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure throughout England, excluding London. Notably, the West Midlands Combined Authority leads the funding distribution with a total investment of £36 million over the next four years.
Purpose of the Funding
This dedicated funding will empower local transport authorities to:
- Develop and construct facilities for active travel.
- Plan for network improvements.
- Engage with the community for better project outcomes.
- Provide training related to active travel initiatives.
Furthermore, the revenue generated from this fund will aid in the early design phases of transportation projects, as well as facilitate community involvement efforts.
Transition from Previous Funding
The newly allocated funds will replace the existing Consolidated Active Travel Fund, marking a significant change in how resources are distributed. Funding for six mayoral combined authorities will be disbursed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), while other transport authorities will receive their allocations directly from DfT.
Conclusion
The 2025 Active Travel Fund aims to bolster local transport efforts across England, promoting sustainable transportation modes. As communities embrace walking and cycling, these investments represent a step towards integrated and efficient transport solutions.
