Canary Islands on Alert: Coastal Waves Surge to Four Metres

The Canary Islands are currently under a pre-alert due to anticipated coastal wave surges reaching up to four metres. This warning was activated in response to high tide conditions expected particularly along the northern and western shores. The Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES) confirmed that the alert remains in effect, especially around 3:30 PM during high tide.

Geographic Areas Affected

The severe weather warning applies to various regions including:

  • North coast of Gran Canaria
  • North and west coasts of El Hierro
  • La Palma
  • La Gomera
  • Tenerife
  • Fuerteventura
  • Lanzarote

Recent Tragedy Highlights Coastal Risks

This warning comes following a tragic incident at Isla Cangrejo in Santiago del Teide, Tenerife. On Sunday, four individuals lost their lives and one person remains missing after being swept into the sea by strong waves while at a natural pool. This pool had been closed due to rough conditions but was accessed by swimmers.

Emergency Response and Public Safety

In light of this tragedy, authorities are urging both residents and tourists to stay away from coastal areas. Weather forecasts suggest wave heights between 2.5 and 4 metres, creating hazardous conditions. The Government of the Canary Islands has issued reminders via social media:

  • Avoid areas where waves break.
  • Follow official instructions.
  • Do not approach piers, breakwaters, or isolated coastal spots.

Emergency services are enhancing surveillance and preventive measures across the islands. Officials stress that the power of the Atlantic Ocean should not be underestimated. A moment’s curiosity near the coast can lead to life-threatening situations.
