Mets Express Interest in Cardinals’ Catcher Willson Contreras: Reports

The New York Mets are actively seeking a right-handed hitter following Pete Alonso’s recent move to Baltimore. Reports indicate that the Mets have engaged in trade discussions with the St. Louis Cardinals regarding catcher Willson Contreras.

Mets Show Interest in Contreras

The Mets’ interest in Contreras aligns with the Cardinals’ desire to restructure their roster. The Cardinals are considering trades for several veteran players, including Contreras, Nolan Arenado, and Brendan Donovan. Chaim Bloom, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, has received multiple inquiries about these players but has not finalized any deals.

Contreras’ Career Overview

Willson Contreras, approaching his 34th birthday, has two years remaining on his contract, valued at $36.5 million. Additionally, there is a club option for the 2028 season worth $17.5 million. The three-time All-Star has had a productive career, especially in his last season with the Cardinals, where he achieved:

  • Batting average: .257
  • On-base percentage: .344
  • Slugging percentage: .447
  • OPS: .791
  • Home runs: 20
  • RBIs: 80 in 135 games

Versatility on the Field

Contreras is known for his versatility. Last season, he played 120 games at first base while also serving as a catcher, starting 50 games behind the plate. Additionally, he has logged experience in the outfield, appearing in 39 games throughout his career, though his outfield work does not seem to be part of future plans.

As negotiations progress, it appears Contreras is willing to waive his no-trade clause to join the Mets, further enhancing the potential of this deal.
