The Journey of “Mary, Did You Know?”
Written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene, the creation of “Mary, Did You Know?” spans seven years. Lowry drafted the lyrics in 1984. It wasn’t until 1991 that Greene added the melody, leading to the song’s eventual rise in popularity.
Creative Process
Lowry’s initial inspiration came from a request from his pastor to craft a Christmas program for their church. He pondered the profound questions he might ask Mary, the mother of Jesus, reflecting on her unique experience. As he contemplated, the lyrics began to emerge.
“I just tried to put into words the unfathomable,” Lowry noted. The lyrics ask deeply reflective questions, such as:
- Mary, did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
- Did you know that your baby boy will calm the storm with his hand
