Ex-Maine Lawmaker Quits Graham Platner Campaign After Reddit Post Controversy

The political landscape in Maine has been shaken by the resignation of Genevieve McDonald, a political director for Graham Platner’s U.S. Senate campaign. McDonald stepped down after controversial online posts from Platner surfaced, igniting discussions around ethics and candidate backgrounds.

Resignation of Genevieve McDonald

Genevieve McDonald, a former state representative, was a prominent figure in Platner’s campaign. Her decision to resign was made public on a Friday, marked by a notable letter sent exclusively to the Bangor Daily News. McDonald expressed that the inappropriate remarks made by Platner were unknown to her when she joined the team, emphasizing they did not align with her values.

Controversial Online Posts

The controversy stems from several posts Platner made on Reddit that include statements deemed highly offensive. CNN reported that he labeled rural, white Americans as “racist” and “stupid” and referred to police officers derogatorily. Furthermore, some of his previous comments hinted that violence might be needed for social change.

  • Platner’s posts from 2013 prompted significant backlash.
  • One post questioned why Black individuals do not tip.
  • Another suggested individuals at risk of assault should “take some responsibility.”

Graham Platner’s Campaign Momentum

Despite the controversy, Platner’s campaign had gained substantial momentum. Since launching in August, his campaign has reached around 11,000 volunteers and raised approximately $5 million within the first two months. This includes a notable $500,000 raised within 24 hours after Governor Janet Mills declared her candidacy for the Democratic primary, setting up a competitive race against U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a Republican.

Challenges Ahead

With McDonald’s departure, the campaign faces increasing scrutiny. Platner, a veteran with experience in the Marines and Army, offered an apology for his past remarks, attributing them to a time of personal turmoil. As the political climate heats up, the Democratic primary will reflect whether voters prefer new candidates or established figures with extensive backgrounds.

The primary race will be closely monitored by political analysts and constituents alike, particularly as former Capitol Hill operative Jordan Wood emerges as a chief opponent. This unfolding scenario emphasizes the challenges candidates face in today’s politically charged environment.
