Hermès Bag Owned by Birkin and Gainsbourg to Be Auctioned

The coveted Hermès bag associated with iconic figures Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg is set for auction. Christie’s will showcase the Haut à Courroies (HAC) 50 at its “Handbags & Accessories” live sale in Paris.

Significance of the HAC 50

This particular bag holds historical value as it was frequently seen with Birkin and Gainsbourg during their travels between London and Paris. Its design inspired Birkin’s namesake handbag, which has become a symbol of luxury.

Recent Auction Records

In July, a different Birkin bag made headlines when it sold for a staggering $10.1 million at Sotheby’s. This sale marked a historic moment for handbag auctions and illustrated the immense value placed on these luxury accessories.

The Origins of the Birkin Bag

  • The original Birkin bag was inspired by a chance meeting between Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, the then-artistic director of Hermès.
  • This encounter occurred during a flight in the early 1980s, leading to the creation of the now-iconic bag.

Design Evolution

Though the current designs of Birkin bags have slight modifications, many original features remain. The original 40 cm size has been adjusted to 35 cm, and modern versions no longer include a shoulder strap.

Historical Background of the HAC

Originally launched in 1892 by Hermès, the HAC was designed to transport boots and saddles. Its two handles and belt-like straps evolved to accommodate travelers’ needs over time.

Upcoming Auction and World Tour

Before being auctioned, the HAC 50 will embark on a promotional world tour. It will make stops in major cities, including:

  • Hong Kong
  • Bangkok
  • Paris

The tour is scheduled from October 30 to November 6, drawing attention to this unique piece. The bag was donated by Birkin in 2019 to support Médecins du Monde, further enhancing its legacy.

This auction not only represents the convergence of fashion history and art but also highlights the enduring connection between the luxury brand Hermès and cultural icons like Birkin and Gainsbourg.
