Surrey Council to Decide on Whalley’s New Tower and Mosque

Surrey Council is set to make a significant decision regarding a new development proposal in Whalley. A public hearing will take place on June 15 at 7 p.m., where residents can voice their opinions.

Proposal Overview

The proposal involves constructing a 38-storey residential tower with 373 units. Additionally, the plan includes a mosque covering 2,029 square metres. This development is located at 13508-13546 98A Avenue.

Support from Council Staff

A planning report indicates that council staff support the project. The report notes the development aligns with existing planning policies and addresses both housing needs and places of worship.

Current Site Use

Currently, the site hosts a single-family residence, which is also being utilized as a mosque.

Parking and Infrastructure Considerations

  • The project will require 151 parking spaces for the mosque.
  • For the residential component, 332 parking stalls will be needed.

Impact on Local Schools

The Surrey School District anticipates that 31 school-aged children will reside in the new tower. In detail:

  • 19 children are expected to attend AHP Matthew Elementary.
  • Seven children will enroll at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School.
  • The rest will pursue alternative education, whether through homeschooling, private schooling, or other districts.

The upcoming council vote is a crucial step in determining the future development landscape of Whalley, addressing both residential demands and community religious needs.
