Oscar Piastri Labels McLaren ‘Idiots’ as Andrea Stella Defends Canadian GP Tyre Bet

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri recently expressed frustration following a questionable strategic decision during the Canadian Grand Prix. He referred to the team’s tyre gamble as making them look “like idiots” after the race did not unfold as anticipated.
Canadian Grand Prix Tyre Gamble: A Review
The race took place amid light rain and cold temperatures, prompting both Piastri and teammate Lando Norris to choose intermediate tyres at the start. Seven drivers, including Carlos Sainz from Williams and Valtteri Bottas from Cadillac, joined them on intermediates.
- Rain conditions led to a decision to start on intermediates.
- Norris took the lead from the two Mercedes after starting from third.
- Piastri noted a mistake was made when the race start was delayed due to a problem with Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad.
Stella’s Defense of Tyre Strategy
Andrea Stella, the McLaren chief, defended the tyre choice. He suggested that had the rain persisted, the tactics might have led to a different outcome. Stella emphasized the difficulty of decision-making under uncertain conditions.
“At the time of the decision, the track was greasy,” Stella remarked. “If the rain had lasted longer, drivers on dry tyres would have struggled.”
Performance in Cold Conditions
Both Norris and Piastri struggled to maintain tyre temperature in the colder Canadian climate. Norris finished the race after dealing with a gearbox failure, which marked his second retirement of the season. He managed to split the Mercedes in the Sprint, finishing second.
- Piastri finished 11th after an incident with Alex Albon resulting in a 10-second penalty.
- Norris highlighted the difficulty of warming up tyres, saying it affected car handling during the race.
Looking Ahead
As the Formula 1 season transitions into the European leg, the Monaco Grand Prix is the next event in a series of races. McLaren aims to learn from this experience and improve their performance in upcoming races.
“We’ll focus on enhancing tyre warm-up in cooler conditions,” added Norris. “Our pace was promising, and with diligent work, we will turn it into points next time.”
