Raghav Chadha Joins BJP; Two-Thirds of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs to Merge

Raghav Chadha has officially announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with a significant portion of members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha. This shift represents a notable challenge to party leader Arvind Kejriwal, particularly following Chadha’s recent demotion.
Significant Defections from AAP
In a press conference, Chadha revealed that approximately two-thirds of AAP’s ten Rajya Sabha MPs will merge with the BJP, marking a critical transition. He expressed concerns regarding AAP’s detachment from its original principles, particularly its commitment against corruption.
List of Defectors
- Raghav Chadha
- Harbhajan Singh
- Swati Maliwal
- Rajinder Gupta
- Vikram Sahney
- Ashok Mittal
- Sandeep Pathak
Chadha emphasized his disillusionment, stating, “The AAP that I gave 15 years of my life has stepped away from honest politics.” He further articulated that he believes he is “the right man in the wrong party.” He lamented that AAP, once a beacon of anti-corruption efforts, has now become compromised.
Chadha’s Political Journey
Having been a founding member of AAP since its establishment in 2012, Chadha had been a crucial ally to Kejriwal, especially during the party’s rise to power in Delhi in 2015, fueled by the anti-corruption movement. He noted, “I was part of the foundational team that built this party in Punjab, Delhi, and other regions.”
Future Prospects
There are indications that Chadha may assume a ministerial position upon his joining the BJP. He justified his departure from AAP by asserting that it no longer aligns with his values. He stated, “I have two choices: leave politics or stand for what is right. I choose the latter.”
Chadha’s transition reflects a larger trend of political realignment, raising questions about the future of AAP and its influence in Indian politics. As he prepares for his new role, the full implications of this merger will become clearer in the coming months.
