Former Dog Squad Owner Guilty of Animal Cruelty After Many Cats Die

Simon Bédard, the former owner of a dog squad in Beauce, has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. His admission came after numerous cats suffered and died due to mismanagement of his business. The plea was made at the Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce courthouse on Monday, a day before his trial was scheduled to begin.

Details of the Case

Bédard, a 50-year-old resident of Saint-Séverin, acknowledged that he allowed unnecessary suffering to animals under his care. He had been the owner of the Escouade canine since 2017. This animal rescue and management organization interacted with over 90 nearby municipalities, providing refuge for abandoned animals.

Neglect and Mismanagement

From January 2023 to April 2024, the organization faced severe disorganization and an overwhelming number of cats. Bédard’s personal issues led him to neglect his responsibilities while still retaining ownership, which contributed to the deterioration of the facility’s operations. Infectious diseases spread rapidly among the cats, with many lacking necessary treatments or humane euthanasia to alleviate their suffering.

  • Escouade canine provided services in Beauce and Estrie.
  • Numerous cats suffered due to lack of medical care.
  • Bédard misused funds for personal purposes, resulting in inadequate resources for animal care.

Consequences of Actions

The negligence did not only lead to suffering but also encouraged unethical practices. Bédard instructed employees to abandon cats in the wild or improperly dispose of deceased animals. Reports indicate a significant number of cats perished due to these actions, although exact figures remain unknown.

During the prosecution, attorney Lindsay Lefebvre emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that sick cats were left untreated and confined without care. An investigation revealed a lack of funds to cover essential vet services, attributing this to Bédard’s misuse of the organization’s income.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

While initially facing multiple charges, Bédard’s plea led to the dismissal of two additional accusations—intentional killing of cats and neglect. The prosecution’s findings highlight the dire conditions at the shelter, justifying the guilty plea. Sentencing observations are set for late July, and a presentence report has been ordered.

Two former employees of the Escouade canine have also faced legal consequences related to the case, with one receiving conditional discharge and community service, while the other was sentenced to nine months in the community.
