Le Festif! Shifts Focus Away from International Headliners

Le Festif! in Baie-Saint-Paul is evolving its approach by emphasizing niche artists rather than international headliners. Festival director Clément Turgeon explained this shift, stating, “We decided to focus on acts that have significant live impact and don’t come with hefty price tags associated with big-name artists.” Now in its 17th edition, the festival recently earned the Félix award for Event of the Year at the ADISQ Gala.

Focus on Local and Emerging Talent

The festival, known for its unique experience, continues to draw more attendees year after year, often exceeding the town’s capacity. This year, Turgeon and his team have the opportunity to enhance the visibility of both local and international groups. “We no longer need to attract new festival-goers; we can invite lesser-known artists who will excite music lovers,” he added.

Artist Lineup Highlights

  • Heavy Lungs – British post-punk group
  • Souls of Mischief – Celebrating 30 years of West Coast hip-hop
  • The Halluci Nation – Canadian duo
  • Otoboke Beaver – Japanese band
  • African Head Charge – British-Jamaican group

International acts will comprise about 30% of the lineup, showcasing Turgeon’s dedication to selecting artists that resonate with audiences. “Many of these artists are discoveries from my travels and other festivals,” he noted.

A Showcase of Quebec Talent

This year’s festival will feature prominent Quebec artists such as:

  • Lou-Adriane Cassidy
  • JF Pauzé
  • Les Louanges
  • Loud
  • Kinji00
  • Pierre Lapointe
  • Louis-Jean Cormier
  • Gab Bouchard
  • Marjo
  • Dead Obies – a surprising return

Turgeon expressed pride in the festival’s growing reputation within the music industry, facilitating confirmations with local artists. He highlighted the importance of the Félix award in attracting partners to the festival, which is essential for maintaining affordable access in today’s inflationary climate.

Commitment to Accessibility

Over 50% of this year’s shows will remain free of charge. Turgeon emphasized that securing sponsorships is crucial for sustaining this accessibility. “To keep offering free shows, we need additional revenue,” he stated.

Enhancing the Festival Experience

This year, the focus has been on improving the overall experience without any major new initiatives, aside from a new stage for Urbania performances. Turgeon revealed efforts to enhance aesthetics across various festival sites, including the Parvis and Gare, and to develop more communal spaces for festival-goers.

New Camping Options

Additionally, 25 fully equipped camping options will be available near the Quai Bell stage to cater to visitors seeking a more immersive experience. The initiative aims to provide alternatives for attendees unable to secure hotel accommodations due to high demand.

Another returning initiative is “J’écoute le show,” encouraging attendees to create a respectful listening environment by refraining from unnecessary talking during performances.
