Sega Genesis’s Low-Rated RPG Returns to Modern Consoles

Shinyuden and Ratalaika Games are bringing back the low-rated RPG, Traysia, originally released on the Sega Genesis in 1991. This revamped version will be available across multiple platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, on April 24, 2026.
Overview of Traysia
Despite the Sega Genesis hosting numerous acclaimed role-playing games, Traysia often does not make the cut. The original Japanese version received poor reviews, notably just 13 out of 40 from Famitsu and 5.25 from Beep! Mega Drive Magazine. Even in North America, the game’s localization struggled with unfavorable critiques.
Critiques and Comparisons
Significant criticism targeted its dated graphics and lackluster gameplay. In an import review from 1993, UK publication Sega Pro articulated these shortcomings, as did German magazine Video Games, which highlighted how Traysia fell short when compared to other Genesis RPGs, like the Phantasy Star series and Shining in the Darkness.
Revival Efforts
Despite its lackluster initial reception, Traysia has experienced a revival in recent years. It was featured in Evercade’s Renovation Collection 1, released in 2022, and received a new physical cartridge version in 2025, which includes a revised English translation and Spanish language support.
New Release Features
The upcoming reissue for modern consoles will likely incorporate elements from this 2025 release. According to the Steam page, it will support Spanish, English, and Japanese languages. New features will enhance gameplay through emulation options, including:
- Rewind and turbo functions
- Save states
- Screen filters
- Artwork gallery
- Cheat functions
- Jukebox featuring music composed by Shinobu Ogawa
Storyline Brief
Traysia centers around a young boy named Roy, aspiring to be a world-traveling adventurer. Leaving his hometown, he embarks on a journey through diverse landscapes until he reaches the Kingdom of Salon. Meanwhile, Traysia, a girl from his past, eagerly awaits his return to their hometown of Johanna.
This reissue is a chance to revisit a game that struggled in its time, but now finds a new audience through fresh updates and nostalgic appeal.
