Ruth Dawson, a determined 40-year-old woman from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, is set to walk the Great Wall of China. This ambitious trek aims to raise funds for the breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!. Dawson is one of only 120 participants selected from over 3,000 applicants for the CoppaTrek! event with celebrity Giovanna Fletcher.
Event Details
The trek is scheduled for September 2026. Participants will traverse approximately 50 kilometers each day for five consecutive days. Dawson’s commitment to this challenge is fueled by her personal journey with breast cancer, which began with her diagnosis in November 2024.
Inspiration from CoppaFeel!
Dawson found inspiration in the story of Kristin Hallenga, CoppaFeel!’s co-founder, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 23. Dawson recalls watching Hallenga’s documentary, which motivated her to advocate for her health.
Personal Experience
“It’s quite scary advocating for yourself and pushing for answers,” Dawson stated. Her ongoing treatment regimen includes monthly injections and daily medications, along with regular health check-ups. Dawson emphasizes the crucial need for rapid and accurate breast cancer diagnoses, especially among younger women, challenging the misconception that breast cancer primarily affects older individuals.
Training for the Trek
- Dawson has been training on the Isle of Wight, completing walks like the ‘Gurnard loop’ and the trail from Sandown to Shanklin.
- She plans to hike Scafell Pike in Cumbria or Snowdon in Wales with her two sons for more intense training.
- In preparation, she will also participate in the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge on May 2.
Fundraising Efforts
Dawson has successfully raised the £4,000 needed for her participation and is eager to contribute even more to CoppaFeel!. She dreams of being led by sports figures like Roy Keane or Paul Scholes during the trek.
