Woman Sentenced for £450k Fraud at GP Surgery | ITV News

A woman in Berkshire has been sentenced to over three years in prison for defrauding a GP surgery of nearly half a million pounds. Lauren Millington, 43, from Hook, Hampshire, received a sentence of three years and two months at Reading Crown Court on April 1. Alongside her, Roger Happe, 44, from Egham, received a nine-month suspended sentence and was instructed to complete 100 hours of community service.
Fraudulent Activities Uncovered
Millington admitted to two counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of concealing criminal property. In contrast, Happe pleaded guilty to charges related to acquiring and possessing criminal property.
From February 2021 to November 2024, Millington served as a finance manager at The Waterfield Practice in Bracknell. During her tenure, she diverted a total of £456,666 from the surgery.
Investigation Details
The investigation began when concerns were raised about suspicious payments to outside medical suppliers. Officers from Thames Valley Police discovered that Millington had altered legitimate banking details. This manipulation redirected funds into accounts she controlled.
- Amount diverted: £456,666
- Additional amount to Happe’s account: £25,190
Both individuals were arrested in January 2025, and charges were brought against them in December of the same year.
Judicial Remarks
Detective Constable Jagdip Sekhon described the fraudulent actions as “calculated and sustained.” He highlighted the use of fake invoices and manipulation of professional systems. Detective Inspector Duncan Wynn noted that Millington had “systematically abused” her position, which left the practice with a significant financial shortfall impacting local community support.
The case, according to Thames Valley Police, showcases their dedication to bringing fraudsters to justice and protecting public finances.
